they need to make severing the embellical cord easier by staggering the cuts in strange patterns rather than a straight cut or with scissors ? (this would simulate chewing the embellical cord) its the first thing you’ll see after being born and could be what happened for billions of years. doing it in a straight line with scisors could make it seem twice as painful because you know where its going.
