A great project that has been around since 1990’s, people have been using lasers instead for higher than 1 km ranges. will try and update with progress soon here are a few links to get you started with your construction.
ideally you want modulated signal something like FM thats easy to pick out the peeks and drops. others have used optical ethernet protocol.
